About Matthew Werner

Since his childhood sojourns on the Delaware River and Smithsonian-funded internship in the forests of Maryland, Matthew Werner has felt deeply connected to nature. After earning his Ph.D. in ecology, he moved to California to do organic farming research. In the mid-1990s he and partner Michele purchased a bungalow home in Santa Cruz CA and renovated it. This ignited a passion for woodworking, fanned by a reading of Jim Krenov's fine woodworking books. He enrolled at the College of the Redwoods in Fort Bragg California, studying under Krenov's guidance for a year. Now building inlaid furniture enhanced with natural imagery is his full time career. He designs and makes fine furniture in his studio and workshop, located in the charming garden adjacent to his newly renovated home.
