Early roots in nature lead to PhD in ecology
“My connections to the natural world are rooted in my childhood, when my family spent summers on the Delaware River and I was free to roam field and forest.”
Matthew Werner
Matthew Werner has felt deeply connected to nature ever since these childhood sojourns on the Delaware River. This bond was strengthened during his college years by a Smithsonian-funded internship doing research in the Maryland woods. After earning his PhD in ecology, he moved to California to do organic farming research.
Inspired by Jim Krenov’s writings
In the mid-1990s Matthew and partner Michele purchased a bungalow home in Santa Cruz CA and renovated it. This ignited a passion for woodworking, fanned by a reading of Jim Krenov‘s fine woodworking books. He enrolled at the College of the Redwoods in Fort Bragg California, studying under Krenov’s guidance for a year. Now building inlaid furniture enhanced with natural imagery is his full time career.
A visit to Matthew Werner’s studio/workshop
Matthew Werner designs and makes fine furniture in his studio/workshop, located in a charming garden adjacent to the newly renovated home. I visited recently to discuss the “Coral Reef Cabinets” commission that he just installed for his client. My next post will be about this “Coral Reef Cabinets” commission. You can view a selection of Matthew Werner’s other fine furniture pieces in his MiArtStudio Gallery portfolio.
Publisher’s note:
MiArtStudio.com is migrating to the WordPress.org software platform. This is the first WordPress post. Google’s Blogger is a great program, however WordPress.org is a more powerful content management system that will result in a better site and blog.
I apologize for the delays to the blog’s flow of content. There are many improvements to the MiArtStudio.com site in the works. MiArtStudio.com is starting to grow! Thank you for your patience and enthusiastic support – KD.
